Winter/Spring 2019 Curatorial Intern, Contemporary Art and Programming – Unpaid
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco is seeking a Curatorial Intern with Contemporary Art and Programming. This intern will gain an immersive learning opportunity in the daily functioning of a Curatorial Department. Through assisting and observing Contemporary Art and Programming staff, the intern will gain insight into the workings of a curatorial department in a large art institution.
Schedule:
The internship will last from January 21, 2019 through March 22, 2019.
This internship is a total of 8 hours per week on any weekday/schedule flexible.
Duties:
- Learn how to conduct museum standard research.
- Learn how to properly document permanent collection objects for a curatorial department.
- Observe and support the organization and installation of a major Contemporary Art commission.
- Learn industry standard best practices for maintaining object files, writing didactics, and organizing exhibitions.
- Assist curatorial staff with writings for a variety of inward and outward facing documents.
- May assist with other projects as needed for the Curatorial development staff.
Educational Opportunities:
- Research artists in the permanent collection.
- Assist with research on potential upcoming exhibitions.
- Observe and learn about the responsibilities of a curatorial department.
- Learn introductory level ethics of working with living artists.
Qualifications:
Interns should be current undergraduate or graduate college/university students. Interns should have an interest in Contemporary Art and Art History. Interns should be enrolled in an Art or Art History concentration or comparable area of study. The ideal candidate will have experience researching and writing about art and be proficient in MS Office Suite. We are looking for candidates with strong writing, communication, and time management skills, and the ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast paced environment. The internship requires tact and courtesy in dealing effectively with artists and museum staff.
