Submission Deadline: October 31, 2023
Introduction: Stockholm University of the Arts is excited to announce the open call for proposals for the Alliances and Commonalities conference in 2024. This conference provides a platform for artists and researchers to explore the tactile, sensory, poetic, and experimental dimensions of how friction and coexistence shape their artistic endeavors and research.
Call for Proposals Details:
- Submission Period: September 15 – October 31, 2023
Exploring Friction and Coexistence: In 2024, we encourage artists and researchers to delve into the embodied and experiential ways in which friction and coexistence influence their artistic practices and research. Friction, the force that allows us to move and interact in the material world, has a profound impact on our lives. When bodies connect, they both unite and disrupt, generating movement and pause. This “sticky materiality of practical encounters” (Tsing, 2004) is a vital aspect of all systems and ecological networks. It connects places, influencing other locations, and interacting with various worlds, sometimes with unintended consequences.
Key Questions:
- Can generative friction teach us about interconnection and solidarity across differences?
- Can it foster dialogue, convergence, and mutual recognition, allowing diverse worlds to coexist?
- Can an emphasis on friction, resistance, and tension help us reimagine coexistence and interdependence on a damaged planet?
Research Profile Areas: Stockholm University of the Arts comprises four Artistic Research Profile Areas, and we invite you to align your proposal with the area most relevant to your current research:
- Concept and Composition: Explores the influences, inspirations, and methods used by artists in their creative processes.
- Bodily and Vocal Practices: Investigates the methods and systems employed in conveying creative concepts through body and voice.
- Site, Event, Encounter: Explores the relationship between art and society, considering the multifaceted nature of participation in contemporary art practices, processes, and events.
- Art, Technology, Materiality: Addresses the technical, material, and social conditions and networks associated with artistic practice.
Conference Focus: The conference’s focus and structure will evolve directly from the subjects, ideas, and themes presented by the selected contributors. Alliances and Commonalities serves as a platform for Artistic Research to challenge and inspire us both as individuals and as a community.
